A 12-year-old entrepreneur from Timaru, inspired by other young creatives on the video-sharing app TikTok, took her business to market for the first time on Friday night.
Brooke Taylor’s bracelets and earrings stall was one of more than 70 stalls at Matariki’s second night market on the main street of Timaru, the market, with one organizer saying “general feedback from traders was that they had spent an incredible night”.
Stafford St was packed for the event, with thousands enjoying the stalls, entertainment, food and many shops staying open late.
“This [the market]went really well, I had quite a few people coming in to buy things,” Brooke said.

The young entrepreneur, who sells her jewelry through her social media page, Brooke’s Custom Bracelets, said she came up with the idea after seeing other young creatives on TikTok doing the same.
“I keep seeing these small businesses on TikTok and thought it would be really cool to make some money and have fun with it.”
Brooke launched her business in November 2021, having developed her own business plan and figured out all the logistics.
“I had to find the suppliers I wanted, know what price to sell, how to run a business and marketing.”
At the moment, she uses her social media page as a way for customers to get in touch with her, show off pictures of her jewelry and share videos of herself informing customers about business operations.
The business has already extended its reach, and Brooke has orders coming in from Christchurch, with aspirations of sharing her designs with customers across Aotearoa.
While she successfully handles the business side while attending school, Brooke also enjoys the creative side – making jewelry, finding the right colors and beads, and browsing thrift stores for items to reuse. .
“Making jewelry is really fun, and it’s kind of relaxing to make it in my free time.
“I go to different ops stores to find some of my supplies and also buy some from Aliexpress.”
She advised others of the same age with similar dreams or aspirations to give it a try.
“Just give it a try and see how it goes,” Brooke said.
“I found something I was interested in and did it.”
Brooke plans to do more markets in the area – maybe a Twizel market next.
Andrea Hutton, Timaru Farmer Artisan Market Manager, who hosted the evening alongside the Timaru CBD Group Experience Task Force, said the market was an “opportunity for all of these talented artisans and artisans”.
She said she made a point of organizing the layout of the market so that there were food stalls scattered among the artisan and craft stalls.
“We spread out the food, so it wasn’t all in one place.
“That way people would walk around looking at the stalls, they could buy something and then get more food.”
Timaru CBD Group Experience Task Force Chair Tim Black said thousands of people attended.
“With all the closures and restrictions imposed by Covid, people are relishing the opportunity to get out again and enjoy being in a crowd.
“A big part of Matariki is about bringing people together, and the market has certainly done that.
“The CBD was absolutely bloated and because the weather was good with us and not too cold, people were lingering and enjoying being in the CBD at night.
Black said it was “brilliant” to have so many people in the community gathered in one place – with some commenting that they had never seen so many people on the high street before.
